The Cicero Institute Calls for a Clean Continuing Resolution
In Washington, some are using the battles over healthcare funding as a power grab. These are political maneuvers that put short-term gain above long-term stability, threatening government operations in the process.
“Just months ago, the One Big Beautiful Bill Act, enacted by Congress and signed into law by President Trump, took responsible and realistic steps toward creating a sustainable path for government-funded healthcare,” said Adam Meier, Director of Healthcare Policy at the Cicero Institute. “They realigned policies to make sure programs like Medicaid and Medicare would be sustainably preserved to support the most vulnerable populations, while properly incentivizing participation from able-bodied adults and the states that administer the programs, primarily funded through federal dollars.”
Meier’s past experience as Director of Montana’s Department of Public Health and Human Services and Kentucky’s Secretary for Health and Family Services gives him critical insight into the importance of a continuing resolution. He said, “It’s disappointing to see one side holding the continued operation of government hostage in an attempt to return us to a highly unsustainable spending path in a shameless attempt to buy votes.”
Once again, the U.S. is facing a government shutdown that has more to do with politics than policy. While these standoffs might score points with certain constituencies, the costs are borne by everyday Americans: delayed paychecks, stalled services, and a further erosion of public trust in government.
Bryan Sunderland, President of the Cicero Institute, is calling for politicians to put the taxpayers first. “The Cicero Institute calls for a clean continuing resolution to keep the government running without interruption,” he said. “Reckless partisan obstruction risks a needless shutdown, harms everyday Americans, and erodes trust in our institutions. Real leaders will reject this destructive nonsense, rise above the fray, and deliver the stability our nation deserves right now.”
Americans deserve stability in government, yet some leaders are using the threat of instability as a bargaining chip. This is not an acceptable strategy.
