The Cicero Institute seeks a motivated, detail-oriented, self-starter to join our operations team as Accounting and Finance Director. You will be responsible for ensuring the financial integrity and efficiency of multiple nonprofit entities as well as designated partner organizations.

OVERVIEW

The ideal candidate will have 3-5 years of experience in nonprofit accounting, financial reporting, and budgeting. This role requires a strategic thinker who can manage day-to-day accounting processes, ensure compliance, and provide financial insights to guide decision-making.

The Accounting and Finance Director will report to the Senior Advisor and work closely with policy and program directors, external auditors, and key stakeholders.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Financial Management and Reporting:
    • Oversee and manage daily accounting operations, including accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, and general ledger activities.Prepare accurate and timely financial statements, monthly close processes, and financial reports for leadership.
  • Budgeting & Analysis:
    • Develop and monitor annual budgets for individual nonprofits and related entities in partnership with the Senior Advisor.Analyze budget variances and financial trends, providing actionable recommendations.
    • Collaborate with the leadership team to align financial planning with organizational goals.
  • Compliance & Audit:
    • Ensure compliance with nonprofit accounting standards and all additional regulatory requirements.Manage the preparation of financial statements for audits and assist external auditors during annual audits and reviews.
    • Oversee grant tracking, reporting, and compliance for restricted and unrestricted funds.
  • Systems & Process Improvement:
    • Maintain and improve financial systems and controls, ensuring accuracy and efficiency.
    • Implement processes to streamline financial reporting, grant tracking, and donor reporting.
    • Train and support staff on financial procedures and compliance.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field. CPA or CMA certification preferred.
  • 5 years of accounting experience, with at least 3 years in a nonprofit environment.
  • Strong knowledge of nonprofit financial reporting standards.
  • Proficiency in accounting software (e.g., QuickBooks)
  • Experience managing multiple budgets, grants, and funding sources.
  • Excellent analytical, organizational, and communication skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a mission-driven, fast-paced, multi-entity organization.

Preferred Skills

  • Familiarity with grant accounting and funder reporting.
  • Experience implementing new accounting systems or process improvements.
  • Understanding of federal and state compliance requirements for nonprofit organizations.
